HHH = YES

Well that was interesting. I did this little ride Saturday called the Horribly Hilly Hundreds. A 200K ride in Wisconsin with over 12,000 feet of climbing. For a boy from the corn fields of Illinois that is a lot of hills.

Enough of the small talk. The stats: 131.36 miles, 8:45:28 ride time, 12,298 feet of climbing, and at no point did any steep arse slope cause me to stop or walk.

I rode smart, but hard. I used the early 2.5 mile climb as a test for how my day would go. The climb was brutal. Around half way up it starts to mess with you by presenting false flats and plateaus only to jerk you upwards again at 15%. I rode the hill strong, but my heart was pounding and the sweat was streaming. All this at mile 8! Sixty-two miles over this hilly terrain would be an accomplishment.

I traveled to and rode with some BFNIC buddies, Cylowe & Psimet. I think all three of us had a different agenda for the ride. At one point or the other we all stated we wanted the 200k route belt notch, but as the miles and hills mount things change.

That tough little roller mentioned above splintered us. The other two descend like madmen and I waited for both to fly by. Only Cylowe did and this surprised me. All three of us were united at the first rest stop (25mi). I will not forget the pain, the sweat, and the anger on Psimet's face when he approached and demanded my car keys. He was opting for the 100K route.

The 200K (124mi) route was broken down into five stages. There were four rest stops and after each was a new stage or loop. Miles 25 to 45 were stage two and I rode with Cylowe. There were so many steep hills I am having a hard time remembering all the details. It was stage three, near the end of it that Cylowe and I split up. We met up at the rest stop (66mi) and I could see he was in a Spot of Bother (thank you Phil). At this point neither one us mentioned 200K. Cylowe is a master navigator. He knows this area, how to read a map, and how to cut the route short if needed. We trudged on.

Shortly, we split. We still had half the ride and numerous hills ahead. At mile 86 I was stopped at an intermediate water stop when he rode up. Left or Right. Cylowe went left and I went right. I would basically ride the next 50 miles solo. These were the toughest miles. Mentally and physically. The suffering was at an all time high. Mile 100 brought the end of a lonely stage four and the last rest stop. I was there for a while as I ate, stretched, and contemplated what the hell I was doing. From this stop the route immediately went straight up in a long fashion. I had to snake my way up this hill. This was the toughest hill for me. I have no idea how I made it.

After a quick water refill at 116 and a tinkle at 125 I was ready for what I knew loomed ahead. The last 3 miles was uphill. It included that same evil ascent we tackled at mile 6 and the steep rise to Blue Mounds State Park, the highest point in Wisconsin. The part of the Midwest the glaciers missed. I met up with 2 or 3 riders near the bottom, but we quickly went our separate ways. Only one darted off in front of me. The rest fell behind. At the halfway point a gentleman was cheering riders on and playing music from his van. I thought his choice of motivational music was odd, but do not recall what tune it was. He yelled, "Keep it up, your almost to the top!" Liar. I knew this was only the midpoint.

At this point I am going 5 to 7 mph, barely moving the pedals. I found the need to stand more, but that hurt sooo much. The last quarter mile had some spectators who offered motivation and cheers. That was fun and helpful. I was standing, turning the cranks, and suffering like a dog. I crossed the finish line to see my two BFNIC buddies, Cy and Psi. That last climb went like this; 3.45 miles, 24.54 time, and 900 feet of climbing. It hurt.

My normal rides and training are done on flat country roads surrounded by corn fields. As far as I know I have never tackled more then 5000 feet of climbing in any one ride. Of course, I know I was not ascending mountains, but these hills were steep, it was 130 miles, and it was 12,298 feet. A cycling achievement for me, for sure. The body does not always cooperate. Heck, the mind does not always cooporate either. This day all things lined up.

My Weekend....

When people ask me if I did anything exciting over the weekend I usually just say no, not really. I don't care to explain to co-workers my cycling and overall fitness obsession. I mean would they really understand it? Let me think......

"Oh, I had a great weekend. I spent it training for the HHH. That is an upcoming cycling event where I will ride 124 miles and climb over 12000 feet. My combined Saturday and Sunday rides totalled 80 miles and 4700 feet of climbing. "

Typically, the response are;

"What?"
OR
"You mean motorcycle, right?"

I just leave it at, yeah, I had a lovely weekend. I rode my bicycle and spent some quality time with my family. Clearly, they have no idea that I am not riding around the neighborhood pulling a kiddie wagon, but it works for me.

So, what did you do this weekend?

400 WATTS.....

The 2006 Udder Century was a fast century for me with a 5:53 ride time & 17.1 mph average. The 2007 Udder Century was a 400 watt hammer fest! Good times.

The usual suspects of the BFNIC (BikeForums.net IL Chapter) were there along with a couple of second timers and a few first timers. I knew before we even hit the road that this group would be fast. The wattage was just oozing out of some of these guys. I also knew that I wanted to test, push, and punish myself as part of my Horrible Hilly Hundreds (124 miles with 12000 feet of climbing) training.

I was not the driving force of this group, but I managed to hold my own. The results speak for themselves:
  • 100.45 miles / 5:13:42 ride time / 19.21 mph average / 86 rpm avg / 4865 calories.

Not to shabby for the first weekend in June. I see a sub five hour century in this group's future.

Year To Date......

Some quick numbers:
  • Runs = 75 for 329.5 miles for 49:30:50 / 9 min pace
  • Rides = 19 for 714.7 miles for 42:08:09 / 17 mph avg

On the cycling front I am waaaay ahead of last year (my first season) when I ended with over 2500 total miles. Currently most of my running was done early in the year while training for a half marathon. My goal had been to run 15 miles a week for the purpose of cross training and more importantly maintaining a base for marathon training. That is not happening. This week I have no runs.

This worries me a bit as I plan to run the Chicago Marathon in October. In terms of running this event is right around the corner. Most marathon training plans are 18 to 16 weeks long and require you to have a pre training base of 15 to 25 miles a week. Anything less and you risk getting hurt. See Lance Armstrong in the 2006 NYC Marathon.

According to my calendar, in 18 weeks the Chicago Marathon will be ran. I got no runs this week. I got no plan. June and July are BIG cycling event months for me. Maybe I should stick to cycling? Do I have the time to do both? More importantly do I want to find the time? Questions I need to answer. Later.

Rest Day?

I think it is time for one?

Rides:4 Consecutive Days
Avg. AHR: 126.5
Avg. Time:01:37:17
Total Time:06:29:11
Avg. Speed:17.2 MPH
Avg. Dist.:27.9 Mi
Total Dist.:111.6 Mi
Total Cal. Burned:5343

I have done more mileage then this in consecutive days, but it's the effort that counts. I did intervals, an all out ball busting rain ride (18.8 mph avg in the rain and wind), some roller repeats, and a long recovery ride. Over 6 hours and 100 miles logged this Memorial Day Weekend. Not to shabby for an amature. That is all.

RAIN Ride........

no, not the 160 miles, one way, one day, ride across Indiana that I am doing for a second time this coming July. BUT, I rode in the rain yesterday. In fact by the time I finished there was a full blown Tornado Warning in effect. I am hardcore?!@!?

Now, I am up at 5:30am with the hope of riding. NOT. It's a total rain fest. The family plans really only allow me this time, but the weather, as it was forecasted, is being a bummer. I am so bummed I think I will just stay up and stare out the window....................Later.

Something Different......

INTERVALS!! I have a significant HILLY ride coming up in mid June. I am talking about over 12,000 feet of climbing and 124 miles. I live and mainly ride in a giant corn field. This makes hill training difficult. Or is that impossible.

So, I feel like I have a decent cycling base built up and decided to try some intervals this morning. This is new to me, but I went for ONE minute all out efforts followed by THREE minutes of ride recovery REPEATED Five times. The route was flat with little wind.

INTERVALS = (1 min all out with 3 min recovery) x 5.

Warm Up=13:41 / 3.75mi

1= .43mi 25.8mph 162/197 HR
2= .47mi 28.2mph 146/174
3= .39mi 23.6mph 146/161
4= .44mi 26.5mph 152/170
5= .43mi 25.7mph 156/170

cool down/home=34:27 / 9.21mi

total ride was 19.47 miles in 1:07:52.

Some thoughts.....I need more warm up time and less cool down time. My HR numbers show that on efforts 2 thru 5 I had more to give. I hit a new max HR at 197 bpm. It really hurt and for at least a minute at a time I can be pretty fast.

That is all. Later.

All that complaining...............

.....and I end up logging two very solid cycling efforts this weekend. It was two rides for 79.28 miles with a 17.8 mph average. Not to pat myself on the back, but for May these are some very nice looking numbers.

How was your weekend?

NoMansLand..........

is where I seem to be stuck. I can't totally find my cycling legs and form. After yesterday's 5 mile run I realized I have totally lost my running legs and form. I am not running enough to maintain form, but just enough to mess with my cycling. What is a wannabe amature endurance geek to do?

Ride and Run More?!@?!

Finding My Legs......

or cheating the wind? Could be a combination of the two? Anyway, last weekends Century really was a toughie for me (see below). Add in the fact that I slightly tweaked my back doing some post ride stretching and it took me most of the week to recover. I only managed one run, but hey I was trying to listen to my body and take it easy.

It was NOT until Thursday, after a 30 miler, that things started to feel better. It was an easy effort where I just wanted to spin the legs and loosen things up. It worked. I had two great early morning rides this weekend and everything seems back on track. In fact, the legs were real good and produced 70 miles with 18 mph & 17 mph averages. The plan for next week is to log a few more runs.

I have to share a couple of pictures of my little one. It seems she may be ready for that Pink Giant Tricycle!! Happy Moms day to all the Moms!! Later.

Sufferfest..........

Complete and total SUFFERFEST!! My day was a bit of everything. Some fun, some pain, some wind, some pain, some doubt, some regret, and some pain.

I met up with 6 other BFNIC'ers around 7am at the ride start. It was cold and it was windy and it was only 7am. Part of the attraction for this ride is near the begining you get to do a loop around the Joliet Speedway. Yes, the race track where they run the big Nascar Event! It was cool. With a little help (wind) I took the final turn at 35 mph.

Then at mile 20 we turned East into the wind and I went dead. Yep, mile 20 and I was out the back with no hopes of ever seeing the great BFNIC again. Riding solo into a 20 mph headwind is NOT enjoyable. WAIT! A BFNIC'er flats and I am back in the mix. Yeah for me! :) !

Mile 35ish, after the first rest stop, had us back into the wind. We had seven strong riders all lined up in a tight single file paceline. Problem, it was into the wind and we were rolling at 12 mph.........yikes that hurts. At this point I am back at the end of the group trying to hang on for dear life. I am thinking there is no way these guys let me bail on them, but I just might have too. I may have to opt for the 5o mile option, the SAG wagon, or even worse, call the wife to come and get me. I was a mess.

As the route progressed southward we began to get a little break here and there. The crosswind was a toughie, but much better then the headwind. We started to get more tailwinds and the legs started to come out of their coma. At some point a couple of us stopped for a quick potty break and figured with the upcoming tailwind we could catch up. I had some issues though. My bike fell over while I was, uh, going and the seat post turned sideways. I had to fix it and this put me way back off the group. However a 35 mph pace (thanks wind) had me back with the group in no time.

The last 25 miles involved a wrong turn, getting dropped while spinning at 23 mph, and putting an attack in at mile 95 on the MUP. It's just how I roll.

The edge says it was 102.9 miles & a 16 mph avg with a 35 mph max. The winds were blowing at 17 mph on average with gust up to 23 mph. It felt stronger. See all the stats by clicking the link below.

Sudden SufferFest

The ride leaves me with questions; Why did I pop at mile 20? How did I manage to hang in there and actually finish strong? Why do I love the suffering?

Spinning........

This week was a toughie at work. In fact, work seems like it will be a toughie for me for a while. Good think cycling season is about to blast off!!!

Only two runs this week for 10 miles. The legs have been feeling tired. Plus, I have this weird left knee and leg pain thing going on???? With a 100 mile bike ride slated for Sunday, yes tomorrow, I thought it was best to tone it down a bit.

I went out for a nice 25 miler today and tried to spin the legs loose. I think I did and I think it helped. The ride tomorrow is the Joliet Sudden Century. It will be a lovely 100 mile ride on mostly flat country roads. With a projected WINDY Day of 20 mph ESE wnds my NINTH ride should result in massive suffering. I can't wait.

I See The Sun........

I finally managed to get all 15 running miles in this week and before the weekend! See my goal is to maintain some type of running form by logging 15 miles a week. I hope to accomplish this with 3 running days. The rest of the week, well really just weekend, will be dedicated to cycling. This will go on for a couple of months while I prepare for two or three challenging cycling events. Sometime around July I will need to switch it up and start thinking about the Marathon!

Where was I? Oh yeah, running was good this week. Knocked out 7 miles yesterday to get my 15. This morning it was up and out the door on the road bike. Man I love riding early in the morning. The Sun was out with the temp around 50ish when I left and 60ish when I got back. I went for a new route and ended up taking a wrong turn around mile 20 that put me back on my old route? Crazy how that worked out. Anyway, this new route has some potential with some nice rolling tree lined roads along the Fox River.

I was surprised how well my legs reacted after Fridays running efforts. They really wanted to go, so we went. My fifth ride of the season produced and average speed just over 18 mph. This number and myself didn't cross paths last season until late August. It is going to be a fun season.

The Stats: 45.06 miles, 2:29:44 time, 18.1 mph avg with 27.3 max, 129 avg HR with a 158 max, & 81 rpm avg with a 110 max.

Tomorrow the plan is for another early morning ride of 40 to 50 miles. Next Sunday will be my first Organized Century of the year. Just a ho-hum 100 miles in one day. Good times.

Not Ready Yet?

The BFNIC Spring Metric Classic ride was yesterday. It was up in the lovely Crystal Lake area, which means hills. Yes we have some here in Illinois. We don't have any around my riding grounds, but they do up yonder. Hum, that seems like excuse number one? Here go two and three:

  1. See Above ^
  2. Prior to this I had only three rides for 118 miles.
  3. No trainer for me means no riding legs at this point in my season.

The weather was great. The ride and route were very well planned out. It was great seeing the other BFNIC'ers for the first time this year!!

Now the suffering. As this group normally goes (fast) we started out briskly. Especially considering it was the second thirty mile loop that included the hills. We bolted out of the start consistently in the 17 to 21 mph range like it was late season. This pace was cool with me at first, but I did pay later in the ride for it. Plus, I was struggling with finding the right gear. I like to spin, but today I was trying to ride mostly in the big ring with less spinning. I just couldn't find my sweat spot.

After the first thirty'ish mile loop the legs were burning. I regrouped at the stop and things went well until the hills around mile 60'ish. While I couldn't hang at the front I was still maintaining a nice effort up to this point. The last hill at mile 65 finished me. I have limited cycling experience, 1 year for 2500 miles, and none with 15% grades! I think my main missteps were standing too early and not attempting the "serpent weave" back and forth across the rode. See, at the steepest part I was already standing to keep the cranks turning. The legs basically wanted nothing to do with this and shut down. I had to stop and unclip before I likely fell over due to lack of movement.

I felt a bit bummed about having to stop. I mean I am in the best shape of my life, as the saying goes. I am lighter, stronger, and more fit then ever. I think my actions show I may be a bit smarter too. It's early in the season. I just didn't have the legs and more importantly the technique to tackle that hill at mile 65.

I think I may be back to this Bull Valley and that 15% grade. This ride was only 2800 feet of elevation gain. I have one slated for June with over 10,000 feet!

The stats:

69.29 miles / 4:02:24 ride time / 17.2 mph avg with 34.5 max / 125 avg HR / 65 rpm avg with 115 max / 3300 calories burnt.

And in this corner....

we have allergy season. CRAP! I didn't have allergy issues until I turned 30. What is up with that?? Anyway, I finally shake the flu midweek and get socked with more headaches and snot on Thursday. I thought the flu was back, but it isn't.

Allergies can kiss my arse though. I have had three very solid runs this week. A hard effort, a recovery effort, and you ho hum nine minute per effort. The legs have been very responsive.

Only three measly runs? Yep, because today starts three consecutive days of cycling. Spring is back in Chicagoland and I will be head out shortly for a nice 30 miler. Tomorrow is the BFNIC Spring Metric Classic and Sunday will be a nice afternoon recovery ride. Good times.

My Spring Classic??

I can finally stop belly aching about the weather and not riding, well, for a couple of days at least. I can't help it, but I just get pissy, crabby, grumpy, b!tchy, whatever, when I do not get my quality time with my beloved Giant TCR C2. It is what it is.

Yes, I rode my bike today. Still recovering from the flu, been on primary baby poo and vomit duty (ha i said duty) three days straight, only two rides under my bum, AND I still organized my gear Saturday night and headed out Sunday at 8am.

It was cold, sunny, windy, miserable and fabulous all at the same time. The stats will not WOW you, but are decent based on the facts already presented.

My Sunday Stats

Of course, now my throat, head, and lower back hurt, AGAIN. All signs that the flu I was just about to kick really enjoyed the 40 degree and 15 mph NWW wind riding companions. So be it.

Count me IN....

....in the group of haters over at Bikeforums.net. Yep, I hate this freakin weather and I hates it lots!! If you don't want to hear, er, read me crab then be gone with yourself.

It is mid April and 30 degrees. I have the flu. My daughter has the flu and is puking and number twoing every hour on the hour like a freaking machine. My bike has seen the road twice this year and it is Mid April already. We had snow yesterday. It is raining now. I am still sick. I blame it all on Al Gore.

Nope, that didn't help.

A Special Giant.....

Wow, how many pictures of bicycle seat do we need to see????
Anyway, I received and installed my new Specialized Toupe Team Saddle. I think it looks sweet on my Giant TCR C2!! It is a very minimalist type saddle, but supposedly one of the best comfort wise.
I am guessing that some of you non-cyclist are wondering how a guy can ride 100 plus miles on this thing? It's all in the arse conditioning! Seriously though, I still need to get out and log some miles on it to get the fit dialed in, but I have some previous positive experience with the lower line of Specialized Saddles. I have high hopes this one works and well as it looks.
I actually went ahead and broke it in slightly today. I walked away from the bike while it was leaned up next to my white garage door and the damn wind blew it over. Another scuff for the read derailleur and the first for the rear corner of the saddle. OUCH, that really pissed me off. Oh well, nothing is new and shiny forever. Maybe a day at least??

Go, No Go.............

Passed on riding in some challenging conditions today and I am now bummed. Weather and work for the upcoming week will leave me with NO time for cycling. I should have went out this morning full blast into that 25 mph wind!!!

That being said, I did log 6 miles running. Sported some new sneaks, Mizuno Wave Creation 7s. I picked the shoes up yesterday from a local Dick Pond store. While they told me nothing I didn't already know about my feet, running style, and type of shoe needed. I did get to test run 6 different pairs before pulling the trigger.

Back to the run. It was my best run in a while. I guess since the half marahon on 3/18. Shoes were good, body was good and mind was good. It felt satisfying to have a solid longer effort. One my outburst.....I just wish I was riding more. Come on Summer!!!!!!!!

Calories and More Calories....

March 18th was a glorious day for me. Twelve Weeks of hard training came to an end with my successful running of the March Madness Half Marathon. This day also marked the end of my calorie counting obsession. OK, an attempt, and my first attempt at that, to cure this obsession.

For over ONE year I have logged my calorie intake and activities on a daily basis at Fitday.com. I have well over 100 custom entered food items on my account. If I ate out I would look up the nutritional info afterwards and log it in for the day. Unless the food items were generic, say like Milk or Cheese, I would custom enter it into Fitday. Food and Drink from Starbucks to Chillis to Diary Queen to Brown Cow. Every Single Day!!

It was good to me. I went from 236 pounds to 170 pounds. I know more about food nutrition then I ever thought possible. However, the time has come. I do not want to be consumed with having to enter my meals and what the exact calories of this and that are.

I need to let it go and I have. I may still think about what I eat. I may mentally tally my calories before deciding on ice cream or not. I just don't need to be obsessed with entering the numbers and seeing the numbers and maintaining deficiencies. I am sooo dang active that a burger from Red Robin or Birthday Cake Remix from ColdStone don't even put a dent it me :)

Simple fact is we should be eating when we are hungry. Just make smart choices.

Fitday was awesome for me and a great tool. I recommend it to all and any who are looking to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle. Good luck. Later.

Hey Tough Guy......

Slow it down!!

Yeah, it is almost 80 degrees AND March, but your cycling season has just started.

OK, so the weather was, and still is today, off the charts fabulous this weekend. The 06 Giant TCR C2 made its debut on Saturday. I departed around 9am and while it was warm it was overcast and drizzly, but very warm.

Right out of the box I was excited to see how high my cycling fitness level was. That five months of running 20 mpw has me primed and ready! I logged 30 miles Saturday. I felt great afterwards. A little muddy, but otherwise fantastic.

Then came Sunday. The ride started out well, but the last ten miles hurt. As I headed home into the wind the legs went dead. I mean totally dead! I had nothing. I trudged back home for another 30 miles for a total of 60 miles for the weekend.

I was totally fatigued the rest of the day. I couldn't shake it. Plus, I got the sore butt. Yep, like anything else, you need to ease into it. The body needs to adjust to the new activity. There is plenty of cycling left this season.

Do NOT worry my running friends. This is not the end of me running. Just a slight slow down. The goal is 2 to 3 runs a week while the cycling picks up. I still have this little 26.2 mile run planned for October.

The Rest of the Madness

I am by no means a running or race expert. I started running because it was too damn cold to ride my bike and I am obsessed with staying in shape. That being said, this was an awesome event. Very well organized, great support, and a fabulously difficult route.

It was my fourth race and a would be distance PR. I awoke at 5:30am, departed at 6am, and arrived at 7:am. Hey, I wanted to get a prime parking spot and checked in with no issues. Well, I did, and I had plenty of time to warm up for the 8:35am start.

The weather was perfect for a March run. Temps were around 35 ish degrees, the sun was bright and the winds were light. The race was limited to 1000 runners. They had the start marked off with 6, 7, 8, & 9 minute pace markers. I lined up between 8 and 9. I hoped to grab on to a small group that was keeping 8:30 pace, but the start was fast.

I managed to get my pace under control just before the first Hill, Roller, Climb, Mountain....whatever that was. Despite the hills I felt like I was keeping a comfortable and fast pace. It wasn't until the big hill at the halfway point where I felt like I actually slowed while going up one. At this point things started to get tight. This was sooner then I expected the PAIN, but this is coming from a guy who did NO hill training :) !!

Mile 9 brought the longest of the climbs. It would slightly level off, then shot up again. It was a tricky little devil. Mile 11 had a tough little steep son-of-a-gun roller. Some of these climbs would have been tough on my bike!!

The water stations were interesting. I had my technique planned out to grab water near the end, move to the shoulder, stop, drink, then get it going again. I did this twice very successfully. The stops were for a second or two, just to allow me to get the water down. At mile 11.5, the last water station, I tried to just grab, drink, and run all at the same time. Uh, that didn't work and I ended up with cold water all over myself.

After all of that I even had a little finishing kick. My Garmin was ticking away and approaching the 1 hr 50 minute mark as I neared the finish line. I really wanted that time and managed to just sneak in under it.

Afterwards, despite significant stretching, I had a lot of stiffness and pain. The hour long car ride home did NOT help. The knees and shins were throbbing, but an very COLD WATER, a.k.a. Ice Bath, really helped alleviate that swelling and pain. The quads and hammys are still sore, but when a flat lander runs in the hills that should be expected.

I am totally satisfied with my training and race results. I never walked and I battled through the pain, both physically and mental. I am not sure where this leaves my thoughts on running the Chicago Marathon in October though????

Anyway, today is my third consecutive OFF day and I am still not sure I am ready to run. I want to run. I mean three days OFF in a row is bit ridiculous. Maybe a brisk Eddie Vedder (the dog) walk tonight?

Plus, I am itching to get my cycling season started this weekend!!!

Thank to all those who wished me well in this endeavour. I really appreciate the nice comments. Thank you.

This was advertised as a hilly route AND oh boy was it. Three monster climbs and numerous rollers. I spent that last 20 weeks running the flat lands of my neighborhood and have NEVER run up any hills like these. The total elevation was 4207 feet: 2113 feet UP and 2094 feet down. OUCH. My goal was under 2 hours, but I wanted 1:50!! :) More to come later, but I am off to find some ice and a tub. See all the stats via the link below. Later.

4 - 3 - 2 - 13.1?

The countdown is over. I have done all I can do. Eight weeks of base building then 11 weeks of Hal Higdon's Novice Half Marathon Training Plan. Twenty Weeks, 300 miles, and I managed to stay on plan and relatively injury free. It's go time people. Later.

The End Is Near......

I am in the final week of Half Marathon Preparation. Yesterday I completed the longest run of my life, TEN MILES. I have followed Hal Higdon's Novice Training plan almost perfectly. I moved runs and workouts when life called for it. I missed no runs, in fact most weeks I ran more then called for as I had built a decent base prior to starting. I did miss or skip a couple of Strength and Cross Training efforts, but for the most part I was hardcore about keeping to the Plan. I should be ready for March Madness, the Half Marathon!

So, I ran TEN miles yesterday. The time was 1:22:48 for a average pace of 8:33 Min/Mile. This was the pace I was aiming for and hope to achieve for the Half. I switched back to my old sneakers and the left knee felt better. However, I experienced some serious tightness near the end of the run in the knee. I see plenty of ICE in this knee's immediate future!

It is crazy that running for One Hour Thirty Minutes is so taxing on the body. I mean I can ride a bike for Six Hours and not feel half the pain, or is that enjoyment??

Speaking of cycling it is warming up for us MidWesterners. With temps over 50 degrees it is going to be REAL HARD for me to NOT jump on the bike and hammer out 30 miles. I must show restraint though :). It would only do more harm then good at this point in my Half Marathon Journey. I mean I have spent 12 weeks preparing for this event like a MadMan. The bike can wait one more week. Right???

Later.

Espresso Is GOOOOOOD :) !!!!

How do you like my new Coffee Bar? You love it, don't you! You are looking at a
Cuisinart Brew Central (drip coffee maker), Gaggia Coffee DeLuxe (espresso maker) and Rancilio Rocky Doserless Grinder. Oh yeah, look closely and you can see a 1 pound bag of Metropolis Coffee Redline Blend. One of the best Coffee Shops and Roaster in the states! Check them out................HERE! I placed my order Tuesday the 6th. The beans were roasted Wednesday the 7th and delivered today, Thursday the 8th. Can it get any more fresh then that? Later.

That's Gonna Leave a Mark........

Today was a PR day for me on the distance front AND on the discomfort front. It went something like this;

Miles 2 to 5, really bad stomach and number two issues. Miles 5 to finish had my left knee and right hip feeling like they were going to explode. Mile 6 I had to stop to tie my left shoelace. At mile 8.5 the right shoelace came untied, but I ran on. At mile 9 the left one got bored and began flapping in the wind with the right. Good thing the goal was only 9 miles.

With all that being blogged, I still managed to keep a 9:07 pace for the 9 miles. I was out there for 1 hour 22 minutes. That evil cold winter wind was blowing around 15 mph from the west and half my run was straight in to it. It made the 20 degree temp feel like 5. At least the sun was out spreading hope that Spring is near.

So, why all the issues. First, the not so fun to talk about stomach and twossie issues are my own fault. My diet has been pretty poor lately. Well, poor for someone training for a Half Marathon. I mean loading up on Deep Dish Pizza and Red Wine the night before a long run is really dumb. Too much cheese really clogs things up for me..........Now that is too much information :) !

I think the knee and hip issues are shoe related. I have about 70 miles on my 2006 Nike Air Pegasus and this was their first run over 5 miles. They also have a ton of toe box room, which feels weird. I may need to revert back to my older more cushioned Nike Air Max Solas. They are heavier and reaching the end of their life with 295 miles logged. What a poor time to have shoe issues.

I may hit the running shoe store tomorrow, but is two weeks enough time to break in a pair of shoes? I would think not?? Later.

Sidestepped....

Ice Bath, Rest, Ice Pack, Rest, Repeat...........and all is well. Sunday was a complete off day finished with some red wine and the Oscars. I think I must have been more mentally shaken then physically after my poor run on Saturday. When you put in so much effort and time you don't want one miss calculation to bring it all to an end. So, the ankle is good an the knee is normal. Normal meaning it requires a little extra TLC then the rest of me :)!

I highly recommend the ICE BATH, well cold water soak, for anyone feeling the strains of training. It takes only 15 minutes and will have you back on the road running and cycling in no time. Don't cheat, make it all cold water, just skip the ice. The hardest part of the process is just getting your arse down into the cold water.

This week the running has been solid despite being treadmill efforts. If this rain, ice, snow, and wind storm holds off I plan to log my 5 miles tomorrow outside. Yeah for outside. Later.

Training Mistake?

I feel my S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) coming back with vengeance just like winter is, RIGHT now. We are under a Winter Sleet, Ice, and Snow advisory. I was foolish to think that this weeks balmy 45 degree days were the end of the old man?!*!?@?.

So, this was a solid week of outside runs. Almost 20 miles worth of outside runs. The training plan called for a 10k race this weekend. Well, it is February in Chicago and there are NOT too many 10k races going on this weekend. Since this Half Marathon I am doing (3/18/07) is slated as a tough, challenging, hilly course, I thought I better run some hills. All my training runs have been on flat paved roads or the treadmill.

I headed out to Waterfall Glen Trail, a 10 mile loop limestone path of rolling terrain. I guess those two 45 degree days were not enough to melt the snow off the path! Duh!! It was mostly covered with a nice hard packed layer of snow and ice. However, I had made the trip of 25 minutes and was going to give it a try.

I can not really explain it. The ground was uneven, bumpy, slick, and hard. For some reason I did 3 or so miles on the trail then 3.5 on some surrounding roads. The trail running was dumb. I tweaked my left ankle and knee. Both are sore, especially the ankle. My quads and lower back are really tight too.

My first step brought my first thought, NO, but I ran the path anyway. :( I am bumming to think this run could really set me back. After 10 solid weeks of training and results, I am so close to race day! I did the ice bath, well really cold water bath, today and hope it feels better tomorrow. Atleast it may get me out of snow shoveling tomorrow. Later.

Long Run................DONE.

AND it was an outside effort. Once again, a frigid outside effort, but it felt sooo good. The real feel temp was 2 degrees at departure. No problem as I have done this temp once or twice this winter already. The key is the warm up. I gear up and get ready to roll, but first I put in five minutes of brisk walking on the treadmill (yeah I know, the evil dreadmill strikes again) before I head out. This way my second step out the door is a running one. It seems to work for me.

The run was a distance PR for me. It was a very satisfying effort. This run completes week seven of my Half Marathon Training. I started a week late, so that leaves me with four to go. It is really awesome to set a goal and journey towards it. I am seeing progress with every step.

The run numbers: 8.1 miles, 1:09:26, 8:35 pace, 150 avg HR / 162 max HR.

It is not easy to stay on course, but I do. I am finding a way to handle family and work and training and weather and the treadmill with success. To all those out there training away, stay focused and fight through the evil axis of winter. You will be better for it. Later.

Be Gone With Yourself.........

Winter, I hate you. Yes, you have been some what nice this season. However, lately you have been rearing your ugly self. The cold and the below zero temp days for the past two weeks are ridiculous. The 10 inches of snow in February are uncalled for. The 8 straight days of treadmill running have me ready to puke. Just be gone with yourself and make me happy. PLEASE.

Yes I have a long run this weekend. A long run that will be a PR (personal record) distance for me. There is no way I can manage over an hour on the treadmill. So, it must be outside. Is Spring here yet?? Later.

Snow DAY!!

So, I am 33 years old and experiencing my second SNOW DAY this winter. The first one was in December and I had been in the car for over an hour on my 20 mile commute to work when I got the call that our office would be closed. After an hour to get back home it was a lovely little two hour morning trip for nothing.

Today it is the threat of snow that has shut us down. My total car time for almost-to-work-and-back was only an hour this morning. This time I was not pissed that they called so late as I really did NOT want to participate in the Rush Hour Traffic / Blowing Blizzard Like Snow Conditions that the everyone is predicting for tonight.

So, time to do some surfing and finish my coffee. Then off to the gym to use those wonderful treadmills and log some miles. Later.

Sunday, February 11, 2007

13 degrees feeling like 2.......It was a rough start. Things were tight and sore?? I didn't hit my stride until mile 4ish?? Still it was a successful and satisfying long run.

Plus, it was my second run with the Forerunner 305. I uploaded the runs to BIMactive.com then sent the stats to my blog. Pretty cool service. Similar to Motionbased, but no free upload limit and no direct upload.

Eight Crazy Nights............

If you are anywhere near the Midwest part of this great county then you know it is COLD! It has been really cold for that last 14 days or so. Prior to my run on Friday it was all treadmill all the time. Mostly on my POS dreadmill in the basement. I must admit most of my runs this week were late, after dinner, as work and life kept us busy. So, I can not totally blame the cold. I got the miles in though and that is what counts.

It was Eight straight runs inside on a treadmill and I wanted no more of it. Plus, I have this cool new Garmin Forerunner 305 that I just had to try out. It was cold and I fell just short of the planned 4.5 miles, but the pace was fast and it felt real good. The 305 is off the hook sweet! Yes, I like it.

Today I finally completed a real cross training session. I had some time and hit the gym where I logged a nice and easy 50 minutes on the stationary upright bike. As you can see, if you check out my training log in the right hand sidebar, it was a moderate effort/pace for 15 miles. It is exciting to see how easy I could pedal off 15 miles at that pace. This running stuff could really get my cycling season off to a quick start.

Tomorrow is long run day. Seven Miles is the plan. At 9am it will be 14 degrees feeling like 1 degree. I can NOT wait to hit the road. The goal is to hold the pace back to 9 or 9:30.

Anyone out there try or eat Kashi Foods? Currently I am a Kashi fanatic as I try to clean up my diet even more. They make awesome chewy and crunchy granola bars. My current favorites are Pumpkin Spice and Peanut Butter. Plus, I dig the waffles and various cereals. They make great tasting natural food without highly refined sugars, artificial additives, or preservatives, which makes for a better me. Check them out.

While I Wasn't Looking...

I ran a bunch last month. I started a half marathon training plan after building a running base of 15 to 18 miles per week in November and December of 2006. See, you have to train so you can train.

How much is a bunch? 82.2 miles!! I had no idea until I was messing around with the training log reports over at BuckeyeOutdoors.com.

Here are my January 07 Running Stats:

Walks/Runs: 21
Average MHR: 168.0
Average AHR: 146.9
Average Time: 00:34:47
Total Time: 12:10:34
Average Speed: 6.8 MPH
Average Mi Pace: 8:53
Average Distance: 3.9 Mi
Total Distance: 82.2 Mi
Average Calories Burned: 534.1
Total Calories Burned: 11216
This week will be a toughie training wise. First, the weather is horrible. With highs barely above ZERO and real feel temps of MINUS Twenty being forecasted, miles will have to be logged on a treadmill. Secondly, the plan has the length of each run slightly increasing, which means more time. Third, the Wife has a super busy work schedule this week that puts me on the front line of baby duty. Finally, this all means I will be running at night, after dinner, around 8pm, AND on my POS home dreadmill in my dark, cold, and unfinished basement.
Wow, this really reads like I am lining up my excuses?? However, I look at it like I am lining up my motivation! I will succeed. First on the home front, then on the training front.
What about the Bears? Uh, Grossman = Really Bad, Defense = Bad, Offensive Line = Bad, Game Plan = Bad. It started perfectly and ended horribly. I did manage to eat my way to happiness though!

Coffee Facts.........

Today, on The Today Show, they had some type of coffee expert who actually had some interesting information. I love coffee. I love Starbucks. I always wonder how much caffeine is in that delicioius coffee I drink every day?? Well, now I know.

Starbucks Coffee
  • Tall (12oz) = 195 mg of caffeine
  • Grande (16 oz) = 260 mg
  • Venti (20 oz) = 325 mg
  • Espresso Shot (1 0z) = 65 mg

They put two shots of espresso in a Grande Latte. This means the large regular black coffee I normally get everyday after lunch has double the caffeine then the Grande Latte Treat I get once in a while. Interesting? Maybe not, but now we know.

On the training front things are boring. With temps not passing the 10 degree mark I have been logging miles on the treadmill. My home treadmill is a cheap POS!! And I hate it, but miles are miles. Wait, not totally boring. My new Garmin Forerunner 305 has arrived from Amazon!! It is charging right now. Yes, this means I have two Garmins (I have the Edge 305 for cycling). That is why I work!

Today, my little girl is sick and I am staying home to take care of her. I feel so bad for her as she looks so sad. :( The plan is for lots of cuddling and TV watching today.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heat Wave........

Is it possible that I am already done with Old Man Winter? For Chicagoland this has been a mild winter (knock on wood), but I still feel the need to be done with it. I need warmer temps and longer days. I mean, I gots some training to get done. AND I miss my bike! Bike I do love you!

O.K., I moved up the long run to today because of the heat wave. Yep, it was 20 degrees when I departed at 9am. Tomorrow the projected high temp is 15 degrees with massive winds and wind chill. It was a no brainer.

The plan called for 6 miles and I gave it that and just a bit more. I am still working on slowing things down when I run outside. Most of the experts state that a novice should be running his long efforts slower then his anticipated marathon pace. Well, I want to run a sub 4 hour marathon, which puts my "anticipated" pace around 9 minute miles. It seems sooooo slow though. I just need to remind myself that the goal is 26.2 miles at 9 minute pace and training runs of 7 miles at 8 minute pace will do more harm then good in the long run. I think? Who knows?

While I was gearing up, or walking around the house in my Under Armour TIGHT cold gear shirt, the wife blurted out; "You are a freakin machine!" Thank you honey.

Tonight is date night. We have some baby sitters (yes it takes two to handle my little angle) dinner and a movie in our plans. Yep, A Real Movie at the Theater. Yeah for us. Unfortunately, the movie we want to see, Blood Diamond, is not playing nearby, but we will find something. Later.

Scrubs, The Musical.....

With all the BEAR excitement I forgot to mention something about my favorite TV show, Scrubs; I FREAKIN LOVE IT!

Coffee Bucks killed me. I mean it was subtle and not so subtle all at the same time. Every scene had someone holding their Coffee Bucks cup. You know how people hold them so you can see that they are not just drinking gas station coffee, but some real gourmet Coffee Bucks coffee.

Scrubs, The Musical, which I watched last weekend (TiVo), was just pure brilliant comedy television with a touch of heart and feeling added in. It has to be the best 30 minutes of television I have ever seen. Yes, I said EVER! Good times.

The workouts have been solid this week. I am sticking to Hal Higdon's Novice Half Marathon training plan fairly well. I am making the required mileage and then some. I move the weekly rest day between Thursday and Friday depending on work & life. You can follow all of my exciting training by clicking on the sidebare link to my log over at Buckeyeoutdoors.com.

I am not a big fan of the cross training, but that is mainly due to the limited options this time of year present for me. Unless, I get to the gym I really do not have any at home cross training options. I am thinking about busting out one of the wife's yoga DVDs for this weekend planned cross training??

Now the core strengthening is something I have developed a nice little at home routine for. Some sit-ups, push-ups, chair dips, scissor kicks and what not. I actually am seeing some results already. It is crazy how fast things can tone up when you don't have 40 lbs of fat insulating it. :) Later.

10, Feels Like 2........

Yesterday was my long run day and I had no desire to log an hour on any treadmill. So, at 9am I geared up running style and went to it. Actually, I did 4 minutes of warm up on the treadmill. This way I could step outside into the depths of winter and immediately begin my run, which I did.

It was an hour later and 7.16 miles before I stepped back into the warmth of home. I spotted two other runners while I was out there. I battled the elements, my body, and my mind. It was a very satisfying run!

Now I am off to prepare for DA BEARS!!!

Present Tense

Time to stop dwelling on the past and focus on the future. 2007 is well under way, so let's get some work done.

I like goals. I like stating my goals. It makes them real. It makes me accountable.

2007 Goals

3/18/07 March Madness Half Marathon 13.1 Mile Hilly Course. Already Registered.

6/16/07 Horribly Hilly Hundreds 124.2 Miles with 10,700 feet of elevation gain.

7/14/07 Ride Across Indiana 160 Miles, One Way, One Day.

10/7/07 The Chicago Marathon 26.2 Miles. Already Registered.

Mileage goals for the year will likely just happen as part of my training, but they are 2007 cycling miles and 703 running miles.

I plan to ride several other centuries (The Sudden, The Udder, The 4th Metric, The Psycho's Double, & The BFNIC), but these are open for consideration due to family and this new commitment to running.

As you can see I have become or WANT to become a runner. Why? Well, I am enjoying running as the temps have turned colder. AND, I have two lifelong friends that will partake in this Marathon Journey with me! It should be very interesting.

This year will be different then last year. I will start this year physically fit. In fact I start this year being in the best shape of my life. My current half marathon training has me up to 20 miles a week. I very much look forward to Spring Time and hopping on the bike to see where I am at as a cyclist.

What are you 2007 goals? Will I see you at any of these events? Now get back to training. Later.

Transition......

My life took a turn for the better in 2006. At the start of the year I realized I was a 32 year old, 6'3'', 236 lbs., inactive, unhealthy, and unhappy person. I ate to much, drank too much, and argued with my wife too much.

As we roll into 2007 I am still 6'3'', but little else is the same. I am 33, physically fit, healthy, and 170 lbs. Personally I am happy and more in love with my wife of almost 10 years then I have ever been. I am a cyclist and a runner. I even have thoughts of becoming a Marathoner and a TriAthlete.

In 2006 I cycled 2508 miles. This included five organized centuries (one day 100 mile rides), the one day one way 160 mile Ride Across Indiana, a just for fun solo self supported 85 miler, and one organized metric (one day 62 mile ride). I developed a love for padded lycra and spent way too much on a carbon fiber beauty.

When the temps turned colder I morphed into a runner. I ran a 5K in Sept (24 mins) and was hooked. Then it was a 10K (50 mins) and another 5K (23 mins) in late November. I ended the year with several 20 mile weeks and 264 total miles for the year.

As I went from couch to bike to 10K the weight kept coming off. For me it was all about Calories, Calories, Calories, and Calories. I counted every single one. Fitday.com was my thing. A great site for anyone looking to shed some pounds.

At years end I had a daily calorie average of 2800 and dropped 66 lbs. I didn't starve myself, but I did go to bed hungry in the beginning and it was the jump start shock I needed.

It is a science; you need a 500 calorie deficiency per day, every day, to lose one pound a week.

My wife played a key role in all of this. She managed the home base while I was off riding the summer away. She supported me and encouraged me to do the crazy things like ride 160 miles in one day on a bike. She was genuinely happy for me every time I succeeded at one of those crazy adventures. Not to mention she has lost 50 lbs. doing Weight Watchers. She didn't do any meetings or order any food. She just borrowed the books from a friend and followed the plan on her own. Congrats honey you look fabulous!!

Alright, that was 2006. I have blogged too much. Later.

Review and Goals

After a fabulous year it seems only right that I review and reflect on my successes and failures. Plus, I am a big fan of goals and I have some lofty ones for 2007. This aint a tease, because to do that it would mean I am silly enough to think anyone else cares. The review and goals are coming just not right now. This post is really only a test for me using the email to blog post feature. Two years of blogging and I did not know you could email in your blog post! Who knew? Cool. Later.

Hello 2007.......

Happy New Year Blog World!

06 was a fantastic year for me and my family. I hope the same was true for you. If not, be done with 2006 and focus on the future, 2007. I plan to reflect on my 2006, blog a write up and some pictures and what not, when I get a chance. However, I first must head off to Taco Bell to pick up lunch. It is our Tradition for this day! Last year at this time the Bell was one of triggers to jump start me on my road to fitness. Good times. Later.

This Just In....

Pizza Hut & All You Can EAT = BAD!

Wait, or is that gooooood?!?

Well, anyway, it sure WAS good!

Therefore, I must run and run fast.

I really have nothing. I just can not seem to get into this work thing. Can you? Do you enjoy what you do? The people you work with? The money you are paid?

Too many questions. I all really want to do is go home and run or ride or run then ride. I mean it is like 42 degrees outside! Later.

The Take.............

So I am like 33 some years old, but still love me some Christmas Gifts. This years take was pretty darn good. Don't you think so?

On a different front, I ran almost 22 miles last week. Along with the 30,000 holiday calories I likely ate up and I had a week of two Milestones!!

Merry Christmas to All!!!!

Holidays = GOOOOOD Times

Our Festivus Party was a great success. The Festivus Feats of Strength 5K was not. Too much drinky equals no runny!

I really do not have much to say. We don't have our Christmas shopping done! We will spend more time in our car then with the family were are traveling to see (two families to visit and not near each other). I ran 20 fabulous miles last week before my weekend binging. Holiday Chocolates and Treats are every where I turn. The just ended season of Survivor was the best in years. Scrubs has been awesome. I have discovered red wine. I miss my bike. Finally, I think I will have some more chocolate!

For not much, that was too much. Later.

Goals Are Good.....

"I hope to log a long, for me, run today or tomorrow. I would like to top the 10k mark."

See my training log to the right and you can see that it was OVER 7 miles for me today. My longest run to date at a pretty darn good pace if I must say so myself! Now if I could just get to sleep! Later.

Goals Are Good.....

But first let me tell you this week has been ridiculous. I had a Gourmet Steak Dinner at Sullivan's Steak House on Monday. Then a Gourmet Steak Lunch at the Wildfire Grill on Tuesday. Yeah, I said lunch, it was our office Christmas Lunch Spectacular. I ate like there was no tomorrow and it was fabulous. Tomorrow, it will be Turkey and Wine as we celebrate our annual Festivus for the Rest Of Us Holiday Party. I love the Holidays!!

It has also been a great running week for me. I have had some really solid runs both distance wise and time wise. The legs are feeling really great. I hope to log a long, for me, run today or tomorrow. I would like to top the 10k mark. It could be tough with all that is going on.

Goals, oh yeah, I like goals. I believe that stating your goals is very important as it makes them REAL. I am a big fan of this. Normally I just blog something or mention something to my wife without making a big deal about it. I am still formulating my goals for 2007, but have decided I will post them here and make a big deal about them! Good times.

2007 will involve some major running goals. However, do NOT worry cycling world you are still my first love!! All this goal talk has got me jazed. Or is that my No Fat Triple Shot Grande Latte???

Anyway, how about a goal? I will run a Half Marathon March 18th, 2007.

The Festivus Party is Saturday. How about a Feats of Strenght 5K on Sunday. Who's with me. Please note, I am well aware that I am not the originator of above used Festivus and Feats phases.

"Dude, the numbers don't lie. Look I am older, but still cooler, better looking, richer, and faster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for those who don't know, this is lance training with the 07 discovery cycling team. he is having a conversation of sorts with levi after just dropping him on a climb.

Too Much.....

Footlocker was running its 30% off total order Friends and Family Deal this past weekend and I rarely pass up an opportunity to spend money. The coupon just makes me feel that much better about the purchase!

Before I knew anything at all about running I purchased some Nike Air Max Solas last April from Footlocker (see comment about coupon). Nike shoes fit me, work for me, and I have always wore them. Mainly to play hoops though.

The Air Max is a neutral shoe with pretty decent cushioning. I have had no issues logging over 150 miles in them. Wait, then why the heck did I buy new sneeks? Anyway, I picked up these 06 Nike Air Pegasus, the number one rated shoe for 2006 according to Runner's World.

I ran two treadmill miles last night and they felt great. Very light and fast feeling. My issue is I think they are too flashy. Not reflective flashy, but style flashy. I am big fan of the Nike yellow and black look, but the sliver seems a bit much. They come in your basic white and blue too? Is it too much? Later.

Still Snowed In?

Well, I am not, but a major part of the Midwest is. Family in Southern Illinois is and has been since Friday without power. It is like freezing outside! I hope they are bundled up real good.

I have been running, mostly on my shitty treadmill in the basement. I bought this piece of crap about 5 years ago for the wife when she just had to have one. I knew she would NOT really use it, so we went on the cheap. It was something like $300 bucks at Sports Authority. It is a Pro Form whatever. She did not use it.

Now, it is I paying for being such a cheap arse. I have logged over 100 miles on that thing this past year. I used it to get my weight loss started and then cross train in the summer when time would not allow me to ride. It has always been hard to run on, but lately it has been making odd noises and I stain to log miles that I can run outside with no issues.

Yes, I am telling you I need to shop for a new treadmill. I am talking fitness club level treadmill. My initial research has lead me to believe that I will be spending at least $2000 for one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Speaking of the gym, I made it to the YMCA yesterday for a run and some weights. Oh boy, running on that Nautilus treadmill sure was nice. I could have ran all day. I even managed some incline for 300 feet of climbing. It was a nice 3 plus miles. Hence, my new treadmill jones.

On the camera front the FujiFinePix F20 did NOT cut it and I returned it to Best Buy. Looks like it will be more cash for a Canon SD700. Does it ever end? Later.

Snow Day

After a day of Media Hype it finally Snowed. It wasn't 12 inches for Chicagoland, but it was around 5 inches of wet, messy, and hard to shovel snow. Basically, every thing was shut down yesterday. No Work or School for my household.

Does the snow mean an end to my running career?

Anyone know anything about point and shoot cameras? I had a nice one that was left out in a rain storm. As a result the Canon Powershot S500 now works when it wants to, which is very rare these days.

So, I picked up a FujiFlim FinePix F20se. The above picture was taken with it. Out of the box I am unimpressed with the pics it produces. I need a point and shot camera that takes good pictures in low light. Basically, one the wife can use to take millions and millions of pictures of the kid. The Fuji pictures are no where as clear as the ones the Canon took. Wait a minute..........why not just get another Canon! Brilliant!
